From the breathtaking landscapes of the South Island to the vibrant culture of the North Island, this small country has something for everyone. Here are just a few of our favorite places and activities to explore when traveling in New Zealand.

Tongariro National Park

Located on the North Island, Tongariro National Park is one of New Zealand's most treasured landmarks and is also home to some of its most stunning hiking trails. The park is especially known for its three active volcanoes: Mount Ngauruhoe, Mount Tongariro, and Mount Ruapehu. In addition to being a breathtakingly beautiful area, it is also home to some incredible wildlife—the iconic flightless kiwi bird can often be found wandering around the park. And if you're feeling especially adventurous, you can even take part in an epic cross-country skiing tour!

Rotorua

Rotorua is a city located on the North Island that's known for its bubbling geysers, hot springs, and Maori culture. This city is full of outdoor adventures like mountain biking through lush forests or exploring caves filled with glowworms. In addition, Rotorua offers plenty of opportunities for cultural experiences like visiting local marae (meeting grounds) or trying out traditional Maori cooking techniques. It's no wonder that this region is one of New Zealand’s most popular travel destinations!

Fiordland National Park

Located on the South Island, Fiordland National Park is a nature lover's paradise. This park encompasses 1,219 square miles and features some of the country's most dramatic scenery including towering mountains and deep fiords carved by ancient glaciers. There are plenty of hiking trails throughout the park that offer amazing views—if you're feeling extra brave you can even take a helicopter ride over Milford Sound! For those looking for something more relaxing, kayaking around Lake Te Anau or visiting Doubtful Sound are both great options as well.
